Austin Cove Baptist College Primary Principal Keith Newby with Deputy Katie Greenhalgh. "My Name is Katie Greenhalgh and I’m the Deputy Principal of Student Services in the primary school at Austin Cove Baptist College. I love our school and I’m always encouraged by the students and their eagerness to be engaged in learning and with their friends. My role at the college involves overseeing student’s well-being, discipline and attendance. I also help to organise many of the primary events. Behaviour At Austin Cove Baptist College we believe in firm boundaries to facilitate learning. My personal belief is that when children understand the behaviour expectations and boundaries, they feel safe and are able to learn in an optimal environment. We have a discipline policy used throughout the college and these boundaries are clear and firmly upheld. Our behaviour management is founded in one of the college Core values – Respect. We have a goal of seeing each student thrive and believe this can be achieved by demonstrating respect for teachers, our friends and ourselves. We believe that effective discipline is only possible when carried out in conjunction with the home environment and we aim to come alongside families and build a partnership that is focussed on educating the whole child, this includes academically and behaviourally. Bullying At Austin Cove Baptist College we have a Zero Tolerance policy on bullying, Once again, we work together with families to develop student’s social skills and ensure that their respect for others translates into the way that they treat their peers. Any incidents of bullying are taken seriously and our main aim is for students to understand they have the right to feel safe. We work hard to establish clear lines of communication between students, their teachers and their parents so that areas of concern are dealt with in a positive and timely manner. Events At Austin Cove Baptist College Primary we aim to facilitate events throughout the year which foster a community feel and make primary school and enjoyable and memorable time for our students. For example: • Last week we participated in National Walk Safely to School day which encourages students and families to be active whenever possible. We had over 260 people walk to school. • Sean W smith visited our school today, performing for the students in Kindy to year 6 • In week 9 we are looking forward to running the Cross country with the years 4-6s down at the Bund in South Yunderup. Later on in the year we will also be: • participating in NAIDOC day, to celebrate the indigenous history of the region, • facilitating class excursions • Taking part in National Science week, • visiting the High school production of Pan, • Enjoying dress up free dress days to raise money for our school’s sponsor child in Indonesia. • Competing in Inter-house and Interschool carnivals, All these fun events, plus more, are aimed at giving our students the maximum educational benefit during their schooling."
